Catalan, catalan - Introduction to Catalan language support
DESCRIPTION
This reference page describes the codeset, locale, device, and other
kinds of support for the Catalan language.
Codesets
The operating system supports the following coded character sets (code‐
set) for Catalan: ISO 8859-1 (ISO Latin-1)
ISO8859-1 is the string that represents this codeset in the
names of locales and other system files. See iso8859-1(5) for
more information about the ISO Latin-1 codeset. ISO 8859-15
(ISO Latin-9)
ISO8859-15 is the string that represents this codeset in the
names of locales and other system files. See iso8859-15(5) for
more information about the ISO Latin-9 codeset. UTF-16, UCS-4,
and UTF-8
UTF-16, UCS-4, and UTF-8 are the strings that represent these
codesets in the names of system files. See Unicode(5) for more
information about these encoding formats. PC code-page formats
cp437, cp850, and cp1250 are the strings that represent these
encoding formats in the names of system files. See code_page(5)
for more information about these encoding formats.
See i18n_intro(5) and l10n_intro(5) for introductory information on
codesets and iconv_intro(5) for information on codeset conversion.
Locales
The operating system supports the following Catalan locales:
ca_ES.ISO8859-1, ca_ES.ISO8859-15, and ca_ES.UTF-8, for Spain
The ca_ES.ISO8859-15 and ca_ES.UTF-8 locales use the euro symbol for
currency. Because the ca_ES.ISO8859-1 locale repertoire does not con‐
tain the euro symbol, it continues to use the peseta currency symbol.
You can use the locale command (see locale(1)) to find out which
locales are installed on your system. See i18n_intro(5) for information
on setting locale from the operating system command line.
In the Common Desktop Environment (CDE), you need to set a locale by
setting the session language. To do this, from the Options menu of the
Login window, choose Language. Then, from the Language options menu,
choose a session language.
Keyboards and Printers
Keyboard and printer support for Catalan is the same as for Spanish.
See Spanish(5) for information on keyboards and printers.
