NAMEpmdatg3 - Tigon3 Gigabit Ethernet NIC performance metrics domain agent
(PMDA)
SYNOPSIS
$PCP_PMDAS_DIR/tg3/pmdatg3 [-d domain] [-i port] [-l logfile] [-p] [-u
socket]
DESCRIPTIONpmdatg3 is a Performance Metrics Domain Agent (PMDA) which extracts
hardware-specific performance metrics from one or more Tigon3 Gigabit
Ethernet network interface cards. These metrics complement the generic
network metrics found in the network.interface namespace.
The metrics provided by pmdatg3 all use an instance domain which contains
one instance for each Tigon3 card in the system. The instance names are
the interface names, as seen in the ifconfig command.
On IRIX the network interface corresponding to a Tigon3 card is named
tgN, and can be found using the ifconfig -a command. pmdatg3 uses the
same kernel interface and captures the same metrics as the
tgcmd get_stats tgN command.
On Linux all Ethernet interfaces are named ethN, and can be found by
using the ethtool -i ethN command to check that the driver name is tg3.
pmdatg3 uses the same kernel interface and captures the same metrics as
the ethtool -S ethN command.
OPTIONS
A brief description of the pmdatg3 command line options follows:
-d domain
It is absolutely crucial that the performance metrics domain number
specified here is unique and consistent. That is, domain should be
different for every PMDA on the one host, and the same domain number
should be used for the same PMDA on all hosts.
-i port
Expect PMCD to connect to pmdatg3 on the specified TCP/IP port.
port may be a port number or port name.
-l logfile
Location of the log file. By default, a log file named tg3.log is
written in the current directory of pmcd(1) when pmdatg3 is started,
i.e. $PCP_LOG_DIR/pmcd. If the log file cannot be created or is not
writable, output is written to the standard error instead.
-p Expect PMCD to create a pipe and the connection to pmdatg3 is via
standard input and standard output. This is the default connection
mode.
-u socket
Expect PMCD to connect to pmdatg3 on the Unix domain socket named
socket.

At most one of the options -i, -p and -u may be specified.
INSTALLATION
If you want access to the names, help text and values for the Tigon3
performance metrics, do the following as root:
# cd $PCP_PMDAS_DIR/tg3
# ./Install
If you want to undo the installation, do the following as root:
# cd $PCP_PMDAS_DIR/tg3
# ./Remove
pmdatg3 is launched by pmcd(1) and should never be executed directly.
The Install and Remove scripts notify pmcd(1) when the agent is installed
or removed.

pmdatg3PCP ENVIRONMENT
Environment variables with the prefix PCP_ are used to parameterize the
file and directory names used by PCP. On each installation, the file
/etc/pcp.conf contains the local values for these variables. The
$PCP_CONF variable may be used to specify an alternative configuration
file, as described in pcp.conf(4).
CAVEATSpmdatg3 will not handle the addition of new Tigon3 cards using PCI
hotplug; in that case the daemon will need to be restarted.
pmdatg3 will not start if no Tigon3 cards are present in the system.
