NAME
vms-vaxc - OpenVMS VAX C vs DEC C Differences
DIFFERENCES
OpenVMS has 2 C compilers: VAX C and DEC C. VAX C is an older compiler
and runtime library than DEC C. VAX C predated the recent ANSI stan‐
dards and as a result is more relaxed implementation of the C language.
DEC C is available on both OpenVMS and Digital UNIX; VAX C is not.
Each compiler has its own runtime library on OpenVMS: the VAX C Runtime
Library and the DEC C Runtime Library. The functions in the vms-
vaxc(5) category have different runtime semantics between these 2 run‐
time libraries. Thus if you are porting from OpenVMS VAX C to Digital
UNIX DEC C, you should review these semantic differences. Most of the
differences result from DEC C adhering to the recent ANSI standard for
C.
