GENPHY(4) BSD Programmer's Manual GENPHY(4)NAMEGENPHY - Generic Physical layer (PHY) driver
SYNOPSIS
genphy* at de? phy ? flags 0x<PHYid1><PHYid2>
DESCRIPTION
The genphy driver supports generic PHYceiver devices (PHY) for 10 and 100
Mb/s Ethernet. This device driver is called upon by network device
drivers; no direct administrative control is provided.
As PHYceivers are all slightly different, each chip requires its own spe-
cialized driver. For debugging purposes however, this generic driver only
uses the standard mechanisms as defined in 802.3u and therefore provides
limited, but generic, support. This is not a replacement for a dedicated
driver.
As different PHY chips have different identifications, the ID of a chip
can be coded in the flags field of the kernel configuration file. Please
check the source for details.
The ifconfig(8) command in conjunction with the device driver making us-
ing of this drivers services provides an administrative interface that
allows various physical level parameters (such as duplex, speed, and
loopback) to be controlled.
